This piece was inspired by a fever-dream-like nightmare that I recently experienced. At first, I drew the picture in pencil to give it a soft, dreamy effect. Then, I added colors with Photoshop in order to emphasize the fantastical feeling of the whole scene. The island of cupcakes, flowers, and baby deer are linked by a portal to a place dominated by mice, traps, and fish eyes.
All of these things are intended to represent my deepest inner feelings. The pale cupcakes and the feeble foals indicate my purity, innocence, and naivety. The flowers are a color similar to the Korean national flower, the Rose of Sharon, and they represent the beauty and comfort I see in my own country, Korea. In contrast, the mice, traps, and fish eyes are the things that I deeply fear, somewhat like my upcoming yet unknown future. Finally, the deer straddling the portal can be interpreted as myself taking the courage to explore a new world of education.
